One of the best things that technology has brought into this digital age is the easy access of digital files which we thought before as something that is impossible to do. Technological innovation has now set a new trend that defies boundaries and bypass any demographic variables since such can be done by people at any age from any ethnicity – more so by any gender and from wherever location in the world. One can basically connect effortlessly from the various corners of the world and with so much fun in doing it.

We are talking here the famous trend of “syndicating” online digital files – the PODCASTING. Yes, podcasting has now become one of the “it” things because of its accessibility as well as the fun that goes with it. Where can you easily get songs and videos in just one click? Or updated multimedia products? – The answer is basically through the internet. The question is how? And the best answer is podcasting.

To those who are not so familiar with podcasts or podcasting, the following are some general information about this new craze in the internet.

Podcasts are free series of digital files, usually in a form of digital video and audio files, that are made available over the internet (or online) wherein it can be downloaded easily by podcasting fanatics through what many called as “web syndication.” The most famous tool for podcasting is the Apple Incorporation’s iTunes wherein a wide array of audio and video digital files are available through categories – may it be through artists, genres, or the top hits of the week. These digital files can be downloaded directly to your computer or through your gadgets such as iPods and iPhones.  Furthermore, one can also have direct access on TV episodes that are made available online through podcasting.

Meanwhile, podcasting actually is not a new thing in this digital age because it has been in existence since the internet was born. As a matter of fact, availability and distribution of digital audio and video files started in the mainstream during year 2004, but it just became much famous now because of the emerging of mobile audio/video multimedia equipment such as iPods and mobile phones equipped with such feature. Furthermore, there are already many individuals right now that are banking the hype of podcasting. One can create and publish audio and video digital files, and then post it over the internet so that “onliners” can subscribe to these files through RSS feed.  Podcasting is actually derived from the concept of “broadcasting.” There are podcasts that are for free while there are some that seek payment before one can download these files.

In a nutshell, podcasting is basically publishing as well as downloading online digital audio and video files through certain programs that enable for these files to be accessed.  With all these innovations and accessibility, however, one should not forget to be sure of the safety of these files by verifying the reliability of sources. There are files that contain viruses which, if downloaded, can damage your computer.

Hence, one can truly say that podcasting is now one great innovation in the multimedia industry.  It helps both the producers and the consumers. It is practical, accessible, and fun.
